Research is also being conducted on the Global Positioning System (GPS).

This photo shows the typical rocket trajectory of a sounding rocket flown over the aurora in northern Alaska. Scientists, research staff, and graduate students from Cornell's Department of Electrical Engineering are investigating the aurora from the Poker Flat Research Range, which is northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, and other ionospheric phenomena around the world. Professors Paul M. Kintner and Michael C. Kelley are currently developing payloads for additional sounding rocket missions to study the ionosphere.
